This week we had some nice weather! Which means, more painting! After the cold we’ve had the last couple weeks, I realized that I really don’t have the luxury of procrastinating if I want certain outdoor jobs completed before winter. This includes the chainlink fence, the last of the exterior painting, and cleaning up the yard.

But first things first. I had to take a day to put up our Christmas decorations. I am a typical sufferer of seasonal depression and the long hours of darkness can be hard to take. Some Christmas ambiance is usually the main thing to perk me up. That and I was feeling under the weather that day and couldn’t stomach the thought of manual labor. Wade was not pleased when he saw it. He called me crazy, but hey! Everyone on Instagram is doing it.

The weather for the remainder of the week was pretty temperate and I took advantage of that to dig my remaining post holes (thank god for no frozen ground!), although it was uber wet and oh, so heavy. I had decided to remove chunks of our crumbling concrete pad and dig my 30-inch holes for my footings. When I got about 6.5 inches down on my first hole, I hit concrete. What? I started digging around and discovered a seemingly perfect concrete slab. I started digging my other holes to see if the concrete went under my entire existing pad. And yep, it most definitely does. It’s perfect. Just 6.5 inches too low. Who does these things? So, since I definitely can’t dig up a 20’ by 20’ pad, I’ll have to figure out another way to get my posts up.

I spent lots of time painting, as usual. It just seems endless. Will I ever finish painting these porches?

So let’s discuss our basement for a moment. Our basement is dark and dirty and so creepy. Part of this is that all the windows have been covered by insulations and plywood, so there is zero light coming in. I’ve seen this window covering happen a lot in Milwaukee and I don’t really understand why. This week, I removed all the insulation and plywood covering the basement windows and it’s like a new basement! Don’t get me wrong, there a plenty of cobwebs to be cleaned and it could use a little paint to brighten the walls, but it’s no longer a dungeon. Yay!

We got word this week that we are cleared to close on our new house! So exciting! We close next Wednesday and I can’t wait! This process has been so tedious and pretty stressful, but I have to say, it’s not as stressful as when we were waiting to close on The Maple House and were literally homeless. We’re not desperate, so that’s always a plus!
