Well, I’m on a roll.

On Monday morning, the siders were here bright and early and started wrapping the house. They worked pretty fast. I only went out twice to check and at 10:30 am, they told me they were leaving for the day to get other supplies. I went out an inspected once they left and was again, highly displeased. The corners of the house weren’t wrapped, there were holes and tears in the paper and they had started capping the corners in the wrong color. As soon as they left, I called to complain and told the company that I wanted to terminate our contract. Of course, this led to elevating the issue. They promised to send their best crew if I’d give them another chance. I refused. If they cared so much about our business, they wouldn’t have ignored me for six months and would have sent me their best crew the first time, or for sure, the second time.

I spent a lot of time over the weekend reading installation guides, reading about industry norms and studying the contract. If I prepare, I can usually win arguments, but once I got on the phone with the regional manager, he quoted a Wisconsin State Statute at me, which took me back a little bit. I love reading regulations, but don’t often meet people who do the same. It kind of made me want to be friends with him, but my predominant thought was, you have met your match! They were refusing to cancel the contract and I was slowly wearing them down. He agreed to talk to his superior and call me the next day. That night, I read the chapter of the Wisconsin Statute he had quoted at me. Now I was ready!

When he called two days later, I didn’t get a chance to argue and “beat” him. They agreed to cancel the contract and pickup their materials. Woo hoo! I felt such relief. Although now it’s been months and our house had not been sided, at least I know I won’t be spending a small fortune for siding that will be falling off in three years. Now I can start over with quotes.

During the week, I was working in my home office when I heard a racket at the back of the house. I went to look out the back window, since I’m curious and nosy. There was a man walking out of the yard with some of the siding materials. I ran outside and yelled, “Hey! You just stole my shit!” He was caught red-handed and acted like he didn’t know it was mine. I berated him while he brought it back and set it down. When I woke up the next morning, those same materials were gone. Nice.

I’ve had a rough two weeks and have determined that things will be better next week.
